Media in all its forms is a highly desired career by many graduates from both school and specialised broadcast training establishments, and on face value there are many more applicants than jobs. At Digital Masters, we are a small team and we all struggled ourselves to find opportunities in the industry. When we were lucky enough, yes it is often luck and timing, we all had to willingly undertake mundane tasks in the industry to prove ourselves.

You will need patience and perseverance to get there, but if you are determined to join our industry, you will get there. General across the board skills are incredibly useful to you later in your career path, even if you eventually specialise in say camera, sound or production. Understanding other peoples issues and challenges on a crew, will make you better at your own job.

There are no short cuts, whatever others tell you. It’s not all glamour and excitement, it’s physically tough, and the industry is notorious for long hours, and early starts.

When you do get there, when you sit down and reflect after another long hard day, you will say to yourself that was great, that was yet another enjoyable and satisfying day, and you’ve learnt something new again. Yes you never stop learning. I’ve been in the industry since its inception, and I’m still learning.
